    • 1). Place the painting face down on the scanner and scan the image into the computer at a moderate resolution like 300 or 600 DPI.

    • 2). Open the scanned image in a photo editing program like Gimp or Photoshop and alter the image size so it will fit on the tile. In Gimp, you can alter image size by selecting "Image Size" under the "Image" drop-down menu.

    • 3). Horizontally flip the image in a photo editing program. In Gimp, click the "Image" menu, click "Transform" and click "Flip Horizontally."

    • 4). Print the image of the painting using a pottery decal printer.

    • 5). Trim and remove the excess paper surrounding the image. The entire decal must fit onto the tile.

    • 6). Immerse the decal in a bowl of warm water. The soaking time varies depending on the decal paper brand, so consult the packaging for directions.

    • 7). Rinse a plain white bisque tile and allow it to air dry.

    • 8). Position the decal on the tile's surface. The decal's paper backing should be facing the ceiling.

    • 9). Run a stiff rib over the decal's paper backing using moderate pressure. Continue this process until the decal separates from the paper backing.

    • 10

Discard the paper backing and allow the decal to dry.

Apply two coats of clear glaze with a 1-inch fan brush and allow the glaze to dry.

Place the tile in your kiln and perform a glaze firing. Be sure to use a kilnsitter cone that matches the firing temperature of the tile, decal and glaze.
