How to Trim Daisies
- 1). Pinch out the new growth on daisies in the early spring when they reach a height of 4 to 6 inches. This forces foliage to sprout in leaf nodes and will create dense foliage. Repeat by pinching out the center leaves on all new growth once it has grown another 4 inches.
- 2). Deadhead old blooms as soon as they begin to fade. Deadheading regularly extends the blooming time of your daisies by forcing new blooms to replace the old blooms. Cut the flower stem back to the next set of leaves, where new buds form.
- 3). Cut daisies back to 4 to 6 inches from the ground when blooming ceases. This often sends out a new flush of blooms. Although the second flush of blooms is often less showy than the first, it may extend blooming until well into the fall.
- 4). Trim daisies back to the ground level after the foliage is killed by the fall frost. Mulch with 2 to 4 inches of hay or straw for winter protection. Remove the mulch in the spring when new growth appears.
