Sculpting is an engaging art form that utilizes creativity, design and craft. With an endless number of subjects and styles to take inspiration from, deciding on a specific project will help you focus on the task and complete a successful piece. Other important factors include as having the right tools for the job and choosing the type of clay that works best for you. Whatever you decide to do it is bound to be a satisfying creative venture. - About six basic tools are required for sculpting with clay. You can usually purchase these pieces together as a set or buy them individually from your nearest art supplier or online. You will need the basic sculpture tool, a small cutter, a scraper tool, a double cutter, a curver and a ribbon cutter. These tools are commonly made of wood, although more expensive stainless steel varieties are available.
- Water-based and oil-based clays are the two main types of sculpting mediums. Your level of expertise may be the deciding factor on which to use. Most amateur or novice sculptors stick with oil-based clays since they are easier to work with and don't dry out, while water-based clays require time sensitive work as they tend to dry out rather quickly.
- If you are just beginning in sculpture, keeping the projects simple will work best. It is also useful to practice creating what you know. Familiar objects work well as your mind is accustomed to the details in these figures. Simple inanimate objects that lack the complexities and detail of human busts, figures or animals are good for the novice. As your skills advance so will the complexity of your work and so sculpting busts and realistic figures will come more easily.
