DIY: Woodworking Plan

    • 1). Create a detailed sketch of the woodworking project in question. Draw four different sketches, including one of the sides, the top, the bottom and the ends. These sketches should capture what it will look like when done.

    • 2). Add measurements to each of the sketches. Include measurements for each of the pieces in plain view in the sketch, along with an overall measurement of the entire piece. This should include the height, width and length.

    • 3). Break down the sketches and draw each wooden part. Add their individual dimensions, their specific cuts including angles and degrees, and briefly mention choices of woods that are ideal for each individual piece. For example, explain why lumber may be a better choice than plywood for specific projects. The woodworker will use these sketches and dimensions to prepare his own pieces for the project, so ensure they are detailed and precise.

    • 4). Make a list of the required tools and supplies for the project construction. Include brand names of the bolts and knots used for the project. Include a list of alternatives in case the woodworker cannot find the exact supplies for the project. Also, include dimensions and sketches to show the woodworker what you mean when you are describing the supplies. Always write as if you are teaching a beginner.

    • 5). Add color to each of the sketches to make the woodworking plan come alive and look appealing. Use crayons for this step.

    • 6). Assemble a step-by-step guide for the woodworker on how to make the project in question. Do not include too much detail, but do not assume the builder knows anything. Describe each step in a few sentences, avoiding common talk.

    • 7). Complete the woodworking plants with a real-life still photograph of the finished project. Ensure that it is a good quality photograph, as some woodworkers often check the picture prior to the plan itself. This is often the selling point of the woodworking plan.
