According to the Employment Law Handbook, state-specific wage and labor laws are not in place in Mississippi (See Reference 3). Instead, Mississippi subscribes to the wage and hour laws set by the federal government and covering the following areas: minimum wage, overtime, meals and breaks, vacation leave, sick leave, severance pay, holiday leave and jury duty (See Reference 1). - Mississippi follows the federal minimum wage rates of $7.25 per hour (See Reference 1). However, employees under 20 years old cannot be paid less than $4.25 per hour for the first 90 consecutive calendar days of work (See Reference 3). Additionally, employees who work for tips as part of their wages must be compensated $2.13 per hour unless they exceed minimum wage per pay period with their tips (See Reference 3). Employer failure to comply with these laws can result in imprisonment and monetary fines depending on the severity of the infraction (See Reference 3).

The federal overtime regulations state there is no limit to the number of hours an employee may work as long as the employer pays at least 1 1/2 times the wages for all hours worked over 40 (See Reference 3).
