Simple Workouts Can Get Your Mind and Body Going on the Course It may sound like a fun hobby to play with friends, but like any other sport, the game of disc golf - or frolf - actually requires skill and precision.
If you are new to disc golf, you may not be too familiar with the skills required.
Like the original game of golf, players work to reach par in a set number of strokes or throws.
However, players use round Frisbee-like discs of varying sizes, and some are heavier than others.
Your first time on the course may not go as smoothly as you like.
However, a trip to the gym could help with that.
Below are some exercises to help you improve your skills.
Weightlifting and Muscle Toning Upper arm strength comes in handy for the first throw.
That is because you will use a lighter disc, designed to travel longer distances.
Before you go for the heavy dumbbells, keep in mind that part of a good disc golf game is strength, you do not need to bulk up.
Simple upper body toning exercises consisting of a few reps are a good way to get in shape.
Pushups and crunches are another great way to tone your arm, chest, and abdominal muscles.
In all, this process takes less than half an hour total.
Walking and Stretching Like the traditional sport it borrows elements from, "frolf" involves plenty of walking around the course.
In fact, players still navigate anywhere between nine to 18 holes, sometimes even more.
Therefore, you should be prepared to walk before embarking on the first game.
Toning up with a few leg presses always works, but a walk on the treadmill, elliptical, or bicycle also help tone the legs and calves.
In addition, the extra cardio is always good for the heart.
To loosen up and avoid tightening of muscles, be sure to stretch often as well.
If the course is hilly, practice walking on an incline setting.
Meditation While many may think of yoga, meditation can also refer to just simple concentration.
Disc golf requires just as much mental strength as it does physical.
Yoga may work for you, but other simple forms of meditation or concentration also come in handy.
To test your mindset, you may want to practice at a course as well, and work with any possible distractions.
For example, listen to music as you play, or something with loud noises.
The more you can play through it, the better your game can get.
