103 50
Chronological aging is quite simply a fact of life.
We all know that if we are 40 today we will be 41 on our next birthday, until the day, that is, that someone invents a time machine and then we really can turn back time! However there are a few simple things we can do right now to affect biological aging in an effort to delay the aging process and keep our skin looking younger for longer.
1.
Exfoliate
regularly.
I myself have always been an advocate of regular exfoliation.
The cell regeneration process is a continuous process with the body producing new cells and discarding old cells non stop.
These dead skin cells accumulate and stick to the surface of the skin especially through the use of creams on our face, making our skin look dull and lifeless so in order to keep our skins youthful glow this process usually needs a little help The type of exfoliation product you use on your skin will depend to a great extent on your skin type.
There are very light soft exfoliation products which can be used daily and there are also deeper exfoliating products designed to be only used two to three times a week.
2.
Sleep
well.
This is so important, we have all heard of the term "beauty sleep" well it means exactly that! While we sleep our skin and body regenerates, that is why we generally wake up looking fresh in the mornings.
Getting a good nights sleep can sometimes be very difficult with our hectic lifestyles but finding good methods of relaxation will to help you to de stress and get you a restful nights sleep.
How much sleep is usually dependent on the individual as some people need more sleep than others but eight hours seems to be a general rule of thumb.
3.
Sunbathe
less.
Over recent years we have all started to become more aware of the connection between sunbathing and premature aging.
Ultraviolet rays release free radicals which attack our skin destroying the collagen and elastin and causing our skin to age.
The effects of excessive sunbathing usually take time to manifest themselves on the skin and although your skin can look glowing and healthy after a bout of sunbathing, the damage is done and it is only a matter of time when it starts to show itself.
To prevent this happening it is recommended to use a daily sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 either incorporated in your moisturiser or separately.
Joan Collins now an amazing 76 year old, puts the preservation of her looks down to great make-up and never putting her face in the sun, her body yes but never her face.
4.
Eat
plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
I cannot stress enough the correlation between a healthy diet and good skin.
As well as the antioxidants we can find in good skincare products we should also aim to consume them.
Fresh berries such as strawberries raspberries and cranberries are packed with antioxidants as well as broccoli, grapes and tomatoes.
Aim as well to consume foods rich in Vitamin C which helps to prevent collagen breakdown.
5.
Quit Smoking
.
Smoking is one of the biggest free radical producers there is with each cigarette releasing 10 quadrillion free radicals into the body.
Smoking also robs the blood of vital oxygen needed for cell regeneration, all of this will make the skin look dull as well as cause premature wrinkles around the eyes and mouth.
Smoking also depletes the Vitamin C.
This vitamin is not manufactured by our bodies and is essential in helping to preserve our collagen.
