7 of Philly"s most talked-about craft breweries

No doubt about it: Philly is a city of beer lovers. After all, it's none other than Benjamin Franklin who's quoted as saying, "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."

Whether your taste buds skew more toward the hoppy and the malty, the fruity and the spicy, these are seven of the Philly-area breweries on every beer enthusiast's lips—along with a foam mustache, of course.

1. Dock Street Brewing Co.

Founded in 1985 and operating out of a historic converted firehouse in West Philly, Dock Street is one of the oldest microbreweries in Philadelphia. Take a brewery tour (free, by appointment) to get a closer look at how Dock Street brews its award-winning, small-batch beer, then refuel with a meal at the brewery's attached restaurant. (Insider's tip: Pair Dock Street's signature amber ale with a vegan pizza.)

2. Earth Bread + Brewery

Extending from the sidewalk all the way to the roof, a painted mural completely envelopes one side of this corner brewpub in color. Still, it's the house-brewed beers that are really drawing people through the doors of Earth Bread + Brewery, especially when paired with the eatery's menu of hearth-baked flatbread pizzas.

3. Philadelphia Brewing Company

Philadelphia Brewing Company's 38,000-square-foot brewery has been a fixture of Philly's Kensington neighborhood since 1885. The pretense-free brewery offers free tours and tastings (yes, free!) between the hours of noon and 3 p.m. on Saturdays. You'll be hard-pressed to depart without a case of PBC's award-winning Pennsylvania Pale Ale or Kenzinger tucked under your arm.

4. Sly Fox Brewery

The brewers behind this Chester County-based brewing company were in the company of few when they dared venture into the uncharted waters of craft beer canning in 2006. Their efforts paid off: Sly Fox has earned national recognition for its innovative approach to craft beer packaging.

Of course, Sly Fox's IPAs, ales and lagers can still hold their own; they just tastes a little better when sipped from the company's wide-mouth 360 can.

5. Tired Hands

Don't be surprised to encounter a line outside this Main Line "brew-cafe." Limited-edition bottle releases typically occur on weekend mornings, inspiring die-hard beer fans to queue up early for a first taste of Tired Hand's latest tiny-batch, Belgian-inspired brew.

6. Victory Brewing Company

Imported German malts, local water and whole-flower hops are just a few of the ingredients that help put Victory Brewing Company on the map. Totaling more than 300,000 square feet, Victory's two Chester County breweries produce 12 year-round brews and an equal number of seasonal and specialty brews, adding up to a whopping 102,973 barrels of beer in 2013.

7. Yards Brewery

A hat tip is owed to Yards Brewing Company for its eco-friendly practices (the brewery is Pennsylvania’s first to run exclusively on wind power), but it's better known for producing some of the best British-style ales this side of the Atlantic. Stop by the brewery for a free tour on weekends, or linger in the tasting room for a flight and a game of shuffleboard.
