In the area of Kendall Drive, it's difficult to find a place one might call "homey". Most eateries are shopping center spaces with little or no atmosphere. In the midst of this, I found Joffrey's to stand out from the crowd.
Joffrey's Coffee and Restaurant accomplishes its goal of making you feel right at home. As soon as you enter, the upholstered benches piled with pillows beckon you to have a seat.
The dark wood, rich colors and bold artwork on the walls give the tiny restaurant an ambience much bigger than its size. The service was fantastic, as the waitress took time to chat with me about my order and make recommendations. I never felt hurried and could have happily stayed there for hours.
The selection of coffees was quite large, and very reasonably priced. The grande (medium) latte was $3.10, and was served in a heavy ceramic mug that was very cozy to drink from. The mochas ($3.50 for a grande) were made with Ghiradelli chocolate, and were smooth and rich. Though the food was a bit pricey, the portions were large and very tasty. The Eggs Benedict breakfast ($7.55) was especially good, and the hollandaise sauce was very well seasoned. the chocolate croissant (assorted cakes and pasteries $4.50 - $5.95) was fresh and sweet. There was also a large selection of salads (large crispy chicken salad, $7.55), burgers (bacon cheeseburger, $6.50) and pastas (vegetable penne pasta, $12.95).
Mostly, this is the kind of place you take off to for peace and quiet, the kind of coffee house you might see on Friends. An excellent place to bring your laptop and work, Joffrey's offers free internet access and plenty of good flowing java. After working, invite your friends to meet you in the evening for dinner and entertainment; Joffrey's offers live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights.
With such great food, coffee and atmosphere, Joffrey's should be at the top of your list next time you're looking for laid-back, classy place to go. It's definitely worth it.
