    • 1). Rake the soil and remove underbrush, branches and stones from the area you plan to transport the tree to. Trim back any nearby trees or shrubs. The spot must be at least 8 feet from any other trees.

    • 2). Remove all sod in a 2-feet diameter from the planned planting location. Till the soil, break up any root clumps and remove all weeds from the cleared area.

    • 3). Apply a 2-inch layer of compost to the tilled area. Dig the compost in well to incorporate it into the soil.

    • 4). Dig a hole slightly deeper and wider than the root ball of the sapling. Remove the sapling from its container. Handle the root ball gently to avoid damaging the roots. Place the sapling in the hole and back fill with soil. Press down firmly around the base to support the sapling. Cover the tilled area with a 2-inch layer of mulch and water it thoroughly.

    • 5). Water the sapling frequently enough to keep the soil damp but not water-logged. Fertilize it only after the sapling has settled in.
