How to Keep Your Workout From Making You Sick

As always, know that your first line of defense against catching something is staying well rested.
Your immune system is like any other system in the body.
When your energy is low, your ability to fend off colds and coughs plummets.
So be sure to get plenty of sleep and allow adequate recovery from each workout.
If you do feel a little run down, don't force yourself to adhere to the same workout guidelines you always use.
Beating your energy system to a pulp by having the "discipline" to still run 5 miles or spend 2 hours in the gym is only going to drain your immune system and set you up for a harder recovery.
So scale back your workout when your body is feeling a bit fatigued.
You won't lose any ground I assure you.
In general, I find that cardio can drain your energy and immune system faster than strength training.
If you do engage in some cardio training, I would keep the pace light and the time under 20 minutes.
Your primary goal with cardio when you are feeling run down is to simply get the blood flowing and the energy level up.
If you are not feeling a bit of an energy surge after 5-10 minutes of cardio, pull the plug and rest up for another day.
When it comes to strength training I recommend the following plan; Instead of doing one or two exercises for 3-4 sets, do each exercise in your workout for one set.
If you find yourself feeling more tired after 4-5 exercises you can stop while you still have done a full workout.
If however you do 3-4 sets of just one exercise and call it quits you simply drained yourself on only one exercise.
If you are feeling good after doing everything for one set then by all means go through and do an extra set of each exercise.
Extra tips: Be sure to keep your hands clean, use hand sanitizer is you like as well Activities such as Yoga or taking a sauna can also help to relax and restore your energy levels to help combat viruses.
If you are stressed about something, try your best to find a way to release that stress through hanging out with friends or even watching a funny set of You Tub Videos.
Just a few minutes of laughter can literally keep colds at bay.
