Tips on Bible Memorization for Children
- For anyone, the best way to remember something is to have it constantly in mind, using repetition. Assign a scripture to your child for the week and ask her to repeat it every day or every-other-day. Create a reward system so that she will be more interested in memorizing her scriptures. Over time, with continued study of the Bible, she should be able to quote some basic scriptures.
- When engaging your child in study or reading of the Bible, encourage him to listen to what you are saying. If he is listening to what you are saying, he is more likely to retain the information. Many find that memorization is easier when speaking out loud. Have him read a portion of the Bible during your shared study. Make studying engaging for him by having him act out certain scenes from the portion you are reading, or using specific voices for the different Bible characters.
- Have her memorize basic scriptures that define her beliefs. Teach her to memorize the name of God, found in Psalms 83:18, which says "That they may know you, whose name is Jehovah..." This scripture is found commonly in the New World Translation and in some versions of the King James Bible. Teach these scriptures to her by way of questions. For example, first read the scripture to her and then throughout the week give her a surprise pop-quiz and ask, "What is God's name?" After she knows the answer by heart, add on "Where is that scripture found?"
- Don't just keep telling him where the scripture can be found, actually show him. It will be beneficial for him to know where to find scriptures in the Bible. Give him his own copy of the Bible and highlight certain scriptures that you want him to remember. Have him use a highlighter or pencil and have him underline his favorite scriptures. The use of colored, sticky page tabs will also be useful in helping him find certain scriptures. For younger children, use a picture Bible, since visual aids help in learning and memorization.
