How to Make an Effective Jug Fishing Rig
- 1). Determine what will be the deepest water you will fish with your jug rig. Cut the braided nylon twine, which will form your main line, so it is five feet longer than that. If you will fish in 20 feet of water, your main line should be 25 feet long.
- 2). Secure the fishing jug to the top of your main line. You can use a commercially available fishing jug or one of your own devising. Just make sure it is securely tied at one end to your main line.
- 3). Tie the railroad spike to the bottom of the main line. This is the anchor. It keeps the jug rig in place so that it does not move with the current. You can use a heavier anchor if the catfish are big enough that they can easily pull the rig some distance from where you set it.
- 4). Tie the leader fish lines to your main line. The lowest should be about three feet from the bottom and the next two to three feet above that to prevent tangling. When you tie these to the main line, either loop the main line around the knot you secure the leader with or use a clip to prevent the leader from riding up or down the main line.
- 5). Secure offset circle hooks to the leader lines. Use these type of hooks because they are best at preventing your leader lines from tangling with each other and for properly setting when the catfish bite.
- 6). Bait the hooks, then set the jug rig out in the area you want to fish. Watch for the fishing jug to stand on end vertically when you have fish on the line.
