It all started during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa and her son Joseph II in the 18th century when majestic buildings were constructed in the city.
Two of the major figures in the field of architecture at that time were Johann Lukas von Hildebrand and Josef Emanuel Fischer von Erlach.
By the second part of the 19th century, another major change occurred in Viennese architecture.
It was during this time when Emperor Franz Joseph I ordered the Ring boulevard to be restructured.
Structures then featured the Baroque architecture courtesy of famous architects Gottfried Semper and Karl Von Hasenauer.
These two men were responsible for the Museum of Fine Arts and the State Opera House.
The Art deco style came in at the start of the 19th century.
Known in Viennese language as Juqendstil, the Art deco architecture dominates the tube network in Vienna which is credited to Otto Wagner.
Other works of Wagner with this style include the Majolica House situated at the Naschmarkt and the Postsparkasse in the city's first district.
The Secession building is another example of an Art deco architecture done by Joseph Maria Olbricht, a student of Wagner.
But other than the traditional structures, know that modern architecture also exists in this Austrian capital.
One important figure known for his modern style is Friedensreich Hundertwasser who was fond of colors but disliked straight lines.
His works include the Hundertwasserhaus, an apartment complex with an odd design but is Vienna's third top tourist attraction and KunstHaus Wien.
