A health website recently posed an interesting one-question survey.
It read, "Would you put your loved one in a care home?" About two-thirds of the survey respondents said they would not.
Easy to say, easy to believe - until you are confronted with problems you can't handle .

like being unable to move an elderly patient or living with uncontrollable incontinence.
The time comes, for many elderly patients, when staying home is no longer feasible, regardless of the family's intention to keep the loved one at home.
If Medicare covers your elderly patient, you may be able to get daily help from a hospice provider and thereby extend the time the patient can remain at home.
However, hospice care will not relieve all the stresses of caregiving, and your patient may require care beyond that provided by hospice.
Here are five conditions when you should consider placing your loved one in a care home: 1.
You are unable to move an immobile patient, and, as a result, you cannot keep the patient clean and dry.
2.
You are unable to handle the medical requirements of the patient.
You cannot safely manage IVs, shots, and similar medical needs.
3.
The elder's room is too small to accommodate a hospital bed or wheel chair.
4.
You are neglecting the needs of other family members because of the demands created by caring for your loved one.
5.
The strain of caring for your patient is endangering your own health.
It is not unusual for a patient to outlive a caregiver simply because the demands of caring for an adult are so severe.
Do not feel guilty if you simply cannot handle all the requirements of caring for an elderly relative yourself.
It can be an enormous job.
You have not failed if the care required is beyond your ability to provide.
Do take advantage of all the resources available on the internet to find a nursing home that will provide good care for your loved one.
