Panic attacks are a terrible occurrence and anyone who suffers from them frequently can tell you how much trouble it can cause.
If you find yourself troubled by a recurring condition of panic attacks, don't lose hope - panic attacks can be cured both in the long-term, as well as in the short - you just have to know what to do to help yourself when you encounter them.
In order to stop these attacks, you must first learn how to recognize their onset.
In most cases, by the time you've realized you're having a panic attack it would be too late to remedy it efficiently.
The most important thing to look out for is your breathing - any sudden changes in it should be examined carefully for a few seconds.
Heavy breathing always accompanies panic attacks and is one of the symptoms that can be recognized early enough.
A faint feeling of nausea can also indicate an incoming attack.
Stopping panic attacks can be approached in different ways.
Of course, you should always seek to remedy the problem completely, but this can take time and persistence.
To help relieve yourself from the immediate attack, first try to bring your breath under control.
Remember - it's all in your head, and any tightness in your chest preventing you from breathing in deeply is entirely manifested by your mind.
Try to prevail over these thoughts and control your breathing as much as possible.
Meditation can be immensely helpful in treating panic attacks.
It can both teach you how to improve your breathing technique if you practice it often enough, and it will help calm your mind when a panic attack rushes you.
There are many different ways to meditate and you should explore as many as you can, but the general idea is to picture a place that calms you - try to see it as vividly as possible, imagine every detail carefully and clearly.
Then start breathing in and out, counting from 1 to 10 on each exhalation, and when you've reached 10, just add 1 and start over (so the second time you'll be counting from 1 do 11, the third time to 12 and so on).
Meanwhile, try to associate the counting - and your breaths - with something in the picture.
For example, if you imagined a calm beach scene as your soothing place, you can "synchronize" the waves with your breaths, with the water rushing towards the shore when you inhale, and receding back when you exhale.
Meditation is most effective when practiced constantly though, and it will improve your life in general - so definitely look into it.
