When Do Daffodils Bloom?
- Traditionally, daffodils bloom in the spring of the year. Depending on the climate and location, this commonly occurs in April or May in the Midwest with earlier blooming in the South and later flowers in the North. Look for the flowers about one month after the plant breaks dormancy after the winter.
- The daffodil plant commonly blooms for at least one month, although some varieties bloom most of the summer if conditions are ideal.
- Plant daffodil bulbs in pots in the fall to force blooms in January as houseplants. After planting, keep the pot in an area with temperatures of about 45 degrees for about three months. This can be in a refrigerator, a partially heated garage or shed. Then move the plants to an area of the house with standard room temperature and water the plants regularly. The daffodils will bloom within one month.
- Clip dead flowers after the bloom is complete. This prevents the plant from utilizing energy to form seeds. The plant then uses the energy to build up its bulbs to ensure winter survival. Trim the leaves at ground level once the leaves begin to turn yellow.
