#1: The Mirror Drill

This is a fun, competitive drill you can do with a friend.

Elect a follower and a leader. Stand opposite one another, hands up and palms extended. The leader shuffles rapidly left or right, whichever way the participants decide. The follower must keep hands even with the leader. After 45 seconds, exchange roles. This practice helps to develop your footwork speed, but also helps you to always observe your opponent for clues of what he/she will do next.

#2: The Backwards Snake

This exercise helps enhance your backpedaling skills.

Face the net and gently jog backwards, switching directions, left to right, every few steps. You'll imitate a side winding snake backing up. For more challenge, have a friend throw balls your way. You might feel silly performing this workout, but it'll enhance your muscles and coordination for those tricky backpedaling movements.

#3: The Baseline Hop Drill

Acquire truly explosive lateral movement with this practice.

Stand on the baseline where it contacts either the singles or the doubles sideline. Leap forward and sideways. Hit the right sideline with your right foot, take a hop, and then hit the left line with your left foot. Perform this until you hit the net. Try to perform this below 12 jumps. This is a hard but very effective exercise. You'll notice your lateral moves enhance practically overnight.

Some players may see these drills frustrating, and others may get bored after performing them a couple of times. But remember that your footwork is as important as your tennis serve. Maintain your exercises pleasurable by drilling with a friend. The competition will bring a layer of pressure and fun to the drills.
