    • 1). Pull up weeds immediately when you see them. Grab them at the soil line and pull them up by the roots. Place them in lawn bags for disposal to prevent spreading.

    • 2). Apply a selective herbicide to your lawn. There are many varieties that can be found at your local home improvement store or nursery. Choose one that is specifically for annual grass weed control. Apply the herbicide in early spring. Follow the directions closely on the label.

    • 3). Take proper care of your lawn to keep it healthy. Grass that is tightly packed and healthy will prevent weeds from taking over. Apply a pound of nitrogen fertilizer for every 1,000 square feet of lawn. Fertilize your lawn every three to four months using a lawn spreader.

    • 4). De-thatch your lawn your lawn at least once every season to keep it aerated. Rake over your grass to remove the thatch that has accumulated. Thatch is the cut grass that packs down at the roots. Thatch can prevent water and fertilizer from reaching the soil and the roots.

    • 5). Mow your lawn to a height of 3/4 to 1 1/2 inches tall.

    • 6). Reseed areas in your lawn that are thin or bear. These areas give weeds room to grow. Apply 2 to 3 pounds of seed for every 1,000 square feet of soil.
