The research used the Abuse Assessment Screen questionnaire, a scientific and proven effective form of data solicitation from respondents.
The study covered 2,660 Caucasian women as respondents.
The women were asked to assess and relate their respective experiences during their pregnancy.
Such assessments were conducted through face-to-face and personal interviews, which were done by highly trained and knowledgeable personnel.
Analysts and observers note that the large sample size is one of the major strengths of the research.
Others include the solid participation rate, the participation of women from almost all economic and social strata and the various ranges of pregnancy risk profiles.
Frequency and intensity of the physical abuse experienced by those who claim to have been abused were also noted and compiled.
The study found that 24% of moms who delivered their babies prematurely had revealed having experienced physical abuse.
This figure is compared to the 8% of moms who delivered term newborn infants.
Those moms who experienced physical abuse identified such abuses as being beaten up, minor physical assaults, slapping and harassment.
Some of the revealed violence was documented in police records, while several were not formally accounted for and are considered usual secrets.
Findings of the important research effort highlights that physicians and gynecologists should start recognizing physical abuse as a significant and effective working factor those results to preterm delivery.
