Draw a simple outline, using a pencil at first so you can erase your mistakes. Sketch your outline in approximately the shape of a triangle with a flattened top point to represent the waistband of the skirt.

    • 2). Draw undulating curves along the bottom hem of the skirt to represent extra fabric and to avoid giving your skirt an overly "stiff" effect.

    • 3). Draw lines moving upward from the sides of these curves to represent folds in the fabric.

    • 4). Shade the parts of your drawing that would be farthest from the eye. Slightly darker areas represent shadows and create the illusion of curving fabric.

    • 5). Add details to your skirt such as a detailed waistband or pattern as desired.

Draw a simple outline of the skirt, using a pencil. Focus on creating a narrowing at the waist with slight flaring outward where the skirt would fall over the hips followed by a narrowing again at the bottom hem. Avoid details at this point.

    • 2). Shade the sides of the skirt, decreasing the darkness of your work toward the center, to create the illusion of curving and depth.

    • 3). Add details to your skirt, such as a pattern, to represent the fabric of the skirt or a detailed belt at the waistband.

    Pleated Skirt

Draw your basic outline as you would a flowing skirt, avoiding details and aiming for a stiff and vaguely triangular shape.

    • 2). Draw five or six staggered lines at the bottom hemline of the skirt. These lines must be drawn beneath your original outline and approximately parallel to it. Connect these staggered lines to represent a stiff pleated hemline.

    • 3). Draw lines coming up from the top corners of each higher staggered line that connect to the waistband. This creates an illusion of stiff pleats.

    • 4). Shade the parts of the skirt likely to be farthest from the eye. This adds depth and clarity to your drawing.

    • 5). Add details, such as a pattern or buttons, as desired.
