    • 1). Turn off electricity to the outlet's circuit by flipping the appropriate breaker in the main meter box. Post a sign or verbally tell anyone else in the area not to turn the breaker back on.

    • 2). Stick the probes of a circuit tester into each plug on the outlet to ensure there is no reading. Test other outlets on the circuit if the one you are replacing is not working to ensure there is no electricity flowing to the circuit.

    • 3). Remove the screws holding the cover plate with a screwdriver and remove the plate. Touch the probes of the circuit tester to each of the screws on the side of the outlet to double-check that the electricity is off.

    • 4). Remove the screws that hold the outlet in place and pull it away from the wall. Take note of the location of the wires to ensure that you replace them correctly.

    • 5). Loosen the screws holding the wires to the outlet and pull the wires loose. Inspect the wires for any fraying or burnt parts.

    • 6). Strip the first 1/4 inch of each wire of insulation using wire strippers. Bend the end of each wire into a hook shape.

    • 7). Place the white wire under the silver screw on the new outlet by hooking it under the screw securely. Place the black wire under the brass screw, and the green wire--which may also be bare copper--under the green screw. Tighten the screws down carefully on all the wires.

    • 8). Fold the wires carefully back into the wall while pushing the outlet into place. Replace the screws that hold the outlet, then replace the cover plate and screw.

    • 9). Turn the electricity back on to the circuit and test the outlet with a lamp or radio to ensure it is working properly.
