How to Find Linear Feet

    • 1). Place your tape measure at the position that you want to start measuring. If you're measuring the height of something, place the tape measure at the bottom or top of that object. If you're measuring the distance in linear feet between two points, place your tape measure at the first point.

    • 2). Stretch your tape measure to the second point that you're measuring. If you're measuring the height of something, place the tape measure at the opposite side of the object that you did in Step 1. If you're measuring the distance in linear feet between two points, place your tape measure at the second point.

    • 3). Read the foot marking on the tape measure. This is the distance, in linear feet, between your two points. For example, if your second point is next to the marking for "5" on the tape measure, this means that the distance between your two points is five linear feet.
