    Field-Specific

    • The medical field is a large one that encompasses several specialties. One such specialty is medical journalism, and students who intend to have a career in medical journalism can take advantage of the Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarships. Administered by the AMA, the scholarship program was created in 2004 and gives $10,000 to 12 students each year. The Edward R. Annis, MD, Medical Student Scholarship is an option for students who plan to enter public health. Provided by the Florida Medical Association Foundation, the scholarship grants $1,000 to a student attending an accredited medical school.

    Minorities

    • Minority students tend to be underrepresented in the medical profession and in fact, only 7 percent of the nation's physicians are minorities. Scholarship programs were created in an effort to increase these numbers by providing access to grant money. Through its Minority Affairs Consortium, the AMA provides the annual Minority Scholars Awards. Selected candidates receive a $10,000 scholarship. To qualify, students must be first- or second-year medical students from an underrepresented minority group, and they must be citizens or legal permanent residents.

Administered by the United Negro College Fund, the UNCF/Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships gives $53,500. The research grant is given to twelve African-American students that are full-time MD/Ph.D. students. They must also be within one to three years of completing their dissertation to qualify.

    Women

    • Because women count for 50 percent of matriculating medical students and only 26 percent of practicing doctors, the AMA offers the Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship to female students. The scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to female medical students to research issues affecting women in the medical field. Similarly, the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) provides money to female medical students. The association's Anne C. Carter Award is given to a student who shows leadership. Candidates must be AMWA medical student-members and must be nominated by an AMWA student chapter.

    State-Specific

    • Students attending a medical school in Florida can apply for the Foundation Scholarship. Provided by the Florida Medical Association Foundation, the scholarship gives $5,000 to a third- or fourth-year student at each of six specific medical schools. These are the medical schools at the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida, the University of Miami, the University of South Florida, Florida State University and Florida International University. The Alliance Medical Education Scholarship Fund is available to students attending medical school in Pennsylvania. It is provided by the Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance and gives $2,500 to recipients. To be eligible, applicants must be Pennsylvania residents. They must also be full-time students in their second or third year of medical school.
