    • Quartzite is a metamorphosed rock that is created when sandstone, with a high percentage of quartz content, is heated and compressed in the depths of the Earth. Quartzite most often is white in color, though pink and gray varieties may also be found.

    Locations

    • This type of rock formation is naturally found all around the globe. In the United States, large amounts of quartzite can be found along the Appalachian mountain range and in the Southwest. Quartzite is also located in various parts of the world, with some notable sources being found in Italy, Sweden and Norway.

    Uses

    • Quartzite has been used since ancient times, as the attractive rock could be easily collected in many parts of the world. Ancient cultures used quartzite as an early form of money, for making religious and decorative sculptures, and as tools. Modern uses of quartzite include the glass and pottery industry, roof and floor tiles, and landscaping stone.
