- In the past, lanterns had several different uses because the scarcity of electricity. They were used for signaling, such as in lighthouses or by railroad workers at night. They were also used to simply protect candles used as streetlight or exterior lighting on houses. Since their use was strictly functional, they were commonly made of iron or tinplate. For those that used oil in their lanterns, whale oil was a popular source. A combination of turpentine and alcohol was later found to be more effective than whale oil.
- Lanterns that generate light using a wick are still available, but they generate little light and heat. Today, lanterns use several different light sources, including light-emitting diodes (LED), propane and even batteries. Some models can provide light for more than 24 hours. They are available in a variety of materials such as brass, aluminum and thermoplastic. Portable ones are popular for camping trips and commonly feature a rubber housing to protect it from the elements.
- Many houses feature exterior lanterns either along their driveway or next to the front door. They are utilitarian as well as decorative. Mounts for these lanterns are commonly made of polished brass with a painted finish. They usually use screws to secure them to the exterior of houses. Mounts are commonly 3.25 inches to 3.5 inches in height and 7 inches in width.
- For stand-alone lanterns lining a driveway or a deck, lantern piers are used. They come in a variety or durable materials such as bronze and die-cast aluminum. Most are around 7 inches in diameter. Posts are not used in most piers. Instead, the lantern head sits directly on top of the pier.
- Posted lanterns are also available for purchase from several online retailers. These are usually sold in a complete set with all of the hardware included. They are made of durable metals that can stand up against the elements. Some are highly decorative and come in an assortment of polished finishes.
