How to Knit a Hat for a Figurine

    • 1). Measure the figurine's head. Use the measuring tape to measure around the forehead to the ears to the base of the skull -- exactly where a knitted hat would fit on your own head. For tiny figurines, subtract 1/4 inch from that measurement. For larger figurines -- 6 inches head diameter or more -- subtract 1/2 inch from that measurement. That is how wide the knitted hat should be.

    • 2). Test your gauge and cast on. For any figurine with a head smaller than a baby's, use small knitting needles, American size 3 or smaller. Cast on 10 stitches and knit five rows to determine how many stitches per inch your chosen yarn and needles will give you. Unravel, and cast on enough stitches to meet the final measurement you determined in Step 1.

    • 3). Knit the hat. For optimum stretchiness, follow the pattern knit one stitch, purl one stitch all the way across each row. Hold your knitting up to your figurine's head occasionally to determine when the hat is high enough to fit.

    • 4). Cast off the final row, leaving 8 or 9 inches of yarn. Thread the yarn tail through a tapestry needle and run the yarn through the cast-off stitches. Pull to gather the top of the hat. Backstitch down the side of the hat, and weave an inch of leftover yarn into the knitting. Thread the tapestry needle with the yarn left over from casting on, and weave an inch of the yarn into the knitting. Cut the remaining yarn ends with the scissors.
