Moles are growths on the skin that are varied in shape and usually brown or black and typically appear in early childhood and at some point in the first 30 years of a person's life. It is not uncommon to have between 10-40 moles by adulthood. Moles can appear anywhere on the body and may be alone or grouped.

On the other hand, warts are skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus or HPV virus. They are typically rough and skin colored. However, they may also be dark, smooth or flat. HPV comes in an assortment of more than 60 varieties. HPV causes a rapid growth of cells on the skin's outer layer. In most cases, common warts appear on the fingers, near the fingernails, or on the hands. Certain types of HPV can also cause warts to appear in the genital area.

It is a good idea to remove warts because they can be painful, worrisome and can spread within the body or to other people. With the abundance of over the counter medications, many people treat their warts at home. This is a good method to perhaps save the time and money, but a more effective way to get rid of warts is to see a dermatologist. They have at their disposal many different methods to rid their patients of warts. One solution is to use chemicals. Dermatologists use nitrogen to freeze the warts or salicylic acid in order to cause a blister to form. Once the blister has formed the doctor will peel it off to remove the wart. A laser is also a treatment method used to remove troublesome warts. Dermatologists also have at their disposal a variety of prescription medications that they can offer their patients giving them the option of treating their warts at home and potentially alleviating the need of a procedure that could be painful or end up scarring.
