Homemade Sachet Gifts
- Because the sachet will be used to freshen a certain area, say a dresser drawer or a baby's room where there are a frequent dirty diapers, scent is important. If the sachet will be given to someone you know well, consider finding one of their favorite scents to put in the sachet. If it is for someone you don't know well or if it they will be used as a centerpiece, consider using a milder scent. Some people have a strong aversion to scent and even get migraines from certain ones, so to avoid problems, keep it simple. Potpourri can be purchased at stores or online. You can also make it yourself, but plan well ahead as it takes time to dry the flowers.
- Where the sachet will be used will determine how big you should make it. Most people use them in dresser drawers, so they can be relatively small. Others will be used as centerpieces, so they will be a little larger. Some users will place them in a diaper stacker, so they may want even larger sachets.
- If you know how to sew, making your own bags or pouches is simple. If you don't sew, if you want to save time, or if you want a wide variety of patterns and fabrics, consider purchasing the bags or pouches. There are several websites that sell them relatively inexpensively. Depending on the bags you choose, some have the cord or ribbon closures already sewn in them. If not, you will need to buy some for tying off the tops
- Assembling the sachets is the easy part. Place the potpourri in the bag and tie or sew it shut. If you have several people helping you, such as a bridal party making favors, you can set up an assembly line. To avoid the sachets picking up other odors before you give them away, don't assemble or store them in houses where people smoke as the smoke scent may get into the fabric. Strong scents such as pets or burned popcorn may also transfer to the fabric.
