Sports Photography - Make Your Kids Look Like The Major League Players!

Are you using your digital camera to photograph your child playing sports? I got into sports photography through a friend of mine who asked me to shoot his kids playing baseball, softball and soccer.
What started as a favor has become a small side business for me.
I now create posters and prints for some of the other parents on his kids' team.
Each time I visit the field, there are usually 3 or 4 parents out there with their DSLR type cameras.
They often have their cameras on Full Auto trying to capture their child in action.
Sure enough, they will see my big white Canon lens which tips them off that I am a professional and the questions begin.
Here are some tips for improving your sports photography:
  • Don't shoot down on kids - As adults, we look down on children naturally simply because they are shorter than we are.
Kneeling down when taking the shot will make your child look like a Major League Player.
  • Use Aperture Priority Mode instead of Shutter Priority Mode - We are taught to use a high shutter speed to freeze fast action.
However, for me, making the subject stand out is more important.
Most kids sports photography is shot outdoors in bright daylight.
Set your camera to Aperture Priority.
With bright daylight, the camera will automatically set your shutter speed very high.
This will help blur out fences and parking lots.
  • Use High Speed Continuous Mode - Nothing looks cooler than a burst of photos showing your kid pitching a strike.
High Speed Continuous allows the camera to continue taking the photo as long as the shutter button is held down.
This will allow you to get the shot you need of your child connecting with the ball.
Just use these three photography tips and you will see a dramatic improvement in your sports photography.
Your kids will dig it too.
