How Do I Test Speaker Horns?
- 1). Set your multimeter to read resistance. Set if for a range similar to the impedance rating marked on the speaker horn being tested, a value that likely ranges between 2-ohms and 16-ohms.
- 2). Connect the probes of your multimeter to each terminal on the speaker horn. When you connect the second probe, listen for a click or pop, which represents the current your meter runs through the circuit to measure resistance. This noise is normal and a good sign that your speaker horn is operating normally. No noise may indicate a blown speaker.
- 3). Read the value of resistance from your meter. You are measuring resistance of the speaker horn, not its impedance, so your value will be about two-thirds to three-quarters the impedance rating. For example, an 8-ohm speaker will measure 5 or 6 ohms resistance. Resistance values that differ greatly indicate problems with the speaker horn.
