    Basics

    • Electrical journeymen are often called upon to provide estimates or maintenance. They might replace fuses or circuits, or repair broken generators. Accordingly, electrical journeymen are equipped with a wide variety of tools and wires.

    Skills

    • Electrical journeymen must be analytical and possess good hand-eye coordination. They must be physically fit enough to stand, bend or stoop for long hours, and must be able to follow instructions or blueprints.

    Education

    • Electrical journeymen typically need no more than a high school diploma to land a job. All are required to receive a license from the state in which they work, however. Licensure varies, but usually entails coursework and testing.

    Prospects

    • Job opportunities for electricians are expected to increase by 12 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    Earnings

    • Electrical journeymen can make a nice living. Electricians earned a median annual salary of $22.32 per hour as of May 2008, the BLS states.
