How to Attach Balusters to Stair Treads
- 1). Measure the distance between the stair and the railing. This will give you the size to cut the replacement baluster to. Measures the width of your stair treads and mark the middle with a pencil.
- 2). Drill holes in your stair tread using the pencil mark you made in the previous step. Use a stair drill bit found at local hardware stores. The stair drill bit is important as it drills a second thread for the baluster bolts to screw into.
- 3). Drill a small hole into each baluster to place the baluster bolt into. The baluster bolts should have the width marked on the package, so use the same width drill bit.
- 4). Gently insert the baluster bolt into the baluster; the baluster bolt should fit snugly.
- 5). Twist the baluster into the drilled hole in the stair tread, using your hand. The baluster bolt should screw easily into the stair tread. Continue for all balusters on the staircase.
