Josh Wink - 20 to 20
About.com Rating
Having met Josh Wink backstage at Bonnaroo this summer and even having been lucky enough to get him to record a promo for the Mixdown, I had high hopes for this EP, so it's kind of sad to have to report that there's not a whole lot here to get excited about.
What we do have is Josh's 8-track (7 minus the short intro piece) homage to his acid house roots. Somehow it managed to evoke roots of my own: While listening to the third cut, "Sprung Minimism," something kept nagging at me, one of samples seemed somehow reminscient of a very familiar pattern...
And then, voila! I had it. I own a coin-op game from the early 80s called Xevious and the melody it plays as the landscape scrolls beneath your ship manages to corkscrew itself into your brain in just about the same way. So if someone ports the game to the PS2, I think I know who should do the soundtrack...
There are some good beats here, as on "The Bass" and "Ape Tit" and Club DJs will most likely get some serious mileage using these tracks to bridge from one floorshaker to another. And if you're an acid house head, you should definitely grab a copy of the CD - at less than 85 cents a track, it's cheaper than iTunes!
