How to Install a Fuel Filter in a 2003 Chevy Impala
- 1). Open the hood for access to the fuse panel. The fuse panel is located behind the battery.
- 2). Open the fuse panel by hand and locate the fuel pump relay. Pull the relay out of the slot.
- 3). Start the car and allow it to idle until it stalls. This will depressurize the fuel system. Turn the ignition to the "Off" position. Insert the relay back into the fuse panel.
- 4). Locate the fuel filter under the car in front of the rear wheel. The filter is cylindrical shaped and is attached to the fuel lines.
- 5). Separate the tabs on the inlet side of the fuel filter. Pull the fuel line off the filter.
- 6). Unscrew the nut on the outlet line of the filter. Use a second wrench to hold the stationary nut on the filter to prevent it from turning. Pull the fuel line away from the filter.
- 7). Unbolt the mounting bracket to loosen the filter from the frame. Slide the filter out from under the vehicle.
- 8). Bolt the new filter to the frame. Ensure the arrow on the filter is pointing toward the front of the car. The arrow designates the direction of fuel flow.
- 9). Tighten the outlet line onto the filter with a line wrench. Hold the stationary nut with a second line wrench to prevent the filter from turning.
- 10
Push the inlet line onto the filter until it locks in place, - 11
Start the car and allow it to idle. The car may not start right away, as there is air in the fuel lines. Turn the key to the "Start" position but do not start the engine. Allow the fuel pump to run for three seconds. Attempt to start the car, as the fuel pump should now have pushed fuel through the fuel lines. - 12
Allow the car to idle for five minutes. Observe the fuel filter for any leaks.
