How to Know When Potatoes Are Fully Boiled

    • 1). Boil the potatoes uncovered for at least 20 minutes before checking to see if they are fully boiled. Use a large pot with plenty of water to avoid starchy buildup.

    • 2). Remove a piece of potato from the water once it has boiled for at least 20 minutes. Try to insert a fork or knife into the chunk of potato. These utensils should enter a fully boiled potato easily and slide out cleanly.

    • 3). Observe the appearance of the boiled potatoes. Fully-cooked potatoes should be off-white. Any edges should be soft and not sharply defined.

    • 4). Taste a small piece of potato after you give it time to cool. A fully boiled potato should not taste bitter or crunchy. According to Aki's Kitchen, a properly cooked potato should be "creamy, smooth and tender."
