How to Install a Marine Inline Fuel Filter
- 1). Disconnect your boat's battery cables from its battery. Open all fuel drains--this might require a wrench or screwdriver--on the motor's fuel system and drain the fuel system into an approved container, usually a plastic gas can. Close the fuel system drains and wipe up any spilled fuel. Place the rags/shop towels used to wipe up a spill in a covered metal trash can reserved for that purpose.
- 2). Set a plastic drain pan beneath the fuel filter, in case the fuel line has retained any fuel. Grasp the inline fuel filter in one hand and the fuel line that leads away from the filter--the line between the carburetors or injector block and the filter--in the other hand within 2 inches of the fuel filter.
- 3). Pull the fuel line and the fuel filter in opposite directions with a steady pull to separate the fuel line from the nipple on the inline fuel filter. Hold the filter and the fuel line to the tank vertically, allowing fuel to drain from the filter back toward the tank.
- 4). Grasp the fuel line from the fuel tank at a point about 2 inches from the inline filter with one hand, and the fuel filter with the other hand. Pull the filter free from the fuel line. Push the end of the fuel line from the tank onto the nipple of the new inline filter.
- 5). Grasp the fuel line from the injector block or carburetor near its end with one hand and the fuel filter with the other hand. Push the nipple on the fuel filter into inline fuel filter.
