If you are interested in working with children and progressing towards a career in teaching then getting qualified as a Teaching Assistant is a great place to start. Teaching can be a very rewarding job but as a minimum requirement to become a teacher you must complete an undergraduate degree and a 1 year PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education) as well as a course of ITT (Initial Teacher Training) to get enough practical experience to gain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). For those that do not have the minimum levels of qualifications to get into teaching a Teaching Assistant diploma can kick start your career and you do not need any prior experience or qualifications to complete it.

The nature of Teaching Assistant courses can vary but most tend to include modules for supporting children's development, keeping children safe, contributing to positive relationships, providing support to colleagues and offering support for learning activities. There may also be other useful modules for information and communication technology, supporting children with disabilities or special educational needs, providing displays and supporting children's play.

As a Teaching Assistant there is opportunity to progress. The typical starting salary is between 11,000 and 16,000 but a Higher Level Teaching Assistant can earn up to 18,000 a year. When completing a Teaching Assistant course it is often advised to gain voluntary experience at a local school in order to put the theory into practice. This could also help you to secure a job further down the line as you start to network and build a list of contacts.

The easiest and most cost-effective way to complete a Teaching Assistant diploma is by undertaking a home learning course, either in paper form or online. The course typically takes around 200 hours to complete and you can set a timeframe for completing your work over a 12 month period. Having this flexibility is perfect if you have other work and family commitments that can be difficult to juggle. You will also benefit from the support of a tutor for the 12 month period, who can answer your questions and queries by phone or email.

The assessment for this type of course is based on questions with descriptive answers and completion of practical activities. Since the course is home-based the overall cost, which includes a course manual, assignment, study guide and tutor support, is really quite affordable at around 300 or less. Home learning courses aren't just limited to teaching either. There are literally hundreds to choose from!
