    • 1). Use a marker or chalk pencil designed for use on fabric to trace around a circle template or other circular object, such as a dish, coffee mug or round cereal box, on the material. Have enough fabric available so that the circle traced on the material will be twice as large as the size of the finished yo-yo. As an example, to make a 2-inch yo-yo you need to start with a 4-inch circle. Cut out the circle.

    • 2). Thread a sewing needle with matching or neutral-colored sturdy cotton thread. Make sure the length of thread is longer than the circumference of the circle. Tie a knot near the end of the thread.

    • 3). Fold under 1/4 inch of fabric so that the wrong sides are together.

    • 4). Insert the threaded needle through both layers of fabric, starting with the folded-over strip of fabric. Bring the needle back up about 1/8 inch away from the first point along the edge of the circle. Insert it again another 1/8 inch away and continue this running stitch around the entire circle back to the starting point.

    • 5). Pull on both ends of the thread gently to gather the edge of the fabric circle. Put a small stitch in the gathers to hold them in place. Knot and cut the thread.
