Having good hygiene is essential to treating acne, and to good skin health in general, although it will only play a minor role in whether a someone will develop acne or not.
Many believe that thorough scrubbing is the key to preventing acne.
This could not be further from the truth.
Washing has very little effect on whether acne will develop or not.
The positive effects of washing the face occur once acne is present.
Vigorous scrubbing does not help.
It will only harshen and dry out skin.
This rough treatment will expose the lower layers of the skin (dermis), which will develop an oily protective coating.
During this time the skin is expose to airborne and contact bacteria, and because of the removal of layers, is unable to perform its basic function: protecting us against pathogens and infection.
A better solution is to use a mild cleanser and practice gentle washing.
Obviously, be thorough.
Remember to wash your shoulders, back and chest while in the shower because acne can occur there as well.
It's recommended that one wash their face two or three times per day.
Perhaps in the morning, mid-day and in the evening.
Sebum (natural skin oil) does play a role in advancing acne.
However, removing every trace of it is detrimental and can cause excessive dryness and small cracks in the outer layers of skin.
Not to mention the exposure to bacteria and other airborne pathogens.
Over the counter products are formulated specifically to achieve the correct balance and should be used according to the directions.
There are many natural acne cures floating around the internet these days.
Be careful when considering these products.
For women...
There are numerous formulas that address acne these days.
This makes makeup selection much easier.
Some helpful recommendations include going light on the foundation and using subtle cheek blush.
It is suggested that one search for 'non-comedogenic' labeled makeup.
'Comedones' is a common form of mild acne, with black and white heads being included.
For men...
Shaving can become a challenge.
Electric razors can be used, but beware that even these can nick the skin, especially when blemishes are present.
Do not backshave against the grain.
Remember to always soften the beard with warm water and a pre-shave cleanser.
Natural oil movement and dead skin cell shedding occurs when pores are kept open.
This is the key to minimizing outbreaks.
