If there is one book that defined relationships from the 90's, it would be the book, "Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus".
The title itself implies that there are differences (even significant differences)between men and women.
Political correctness seem to imply that there are no differences between the two sexes.
Naturally, there is some need for political correctness to ensure that there is no mistreatment or unfair practices imposed upon anyone- or any sex.
It is essential to understand and know how to handle these differences.
Initially, upon reading this book, there seem to be a lot of cliches and gimmicks about perceptions and realities on how men and women handle particular situations (e.
g.
crisis, joys, tragedies, etc.
).
But, you have to use the lessons in the book as a guide.
You have the choice to believe or practice some of the lessons.
You have the choice to adapt the lessons to your life.
They are tools to be used at your disposal.
The book, "Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus", will give you tools that you can use to make your relationships with the opposite sex work for the both of you.
Also, it will give you tools that you can use to enhance the relationships with relatives, friends, acquaintances, etc.
The background of John Gray, the author, is quite interesting.
He was a monk before becoming an author and an authority in relationships.
He was married to Barbara De Angelis who is also considered a relationship expert and has written many books about it.
That is quite ironic.
Later, John Gray appeared in many television shows including Oprah Winfrey Show which enabled him to gain more popularity during the 90's.
His vast experience gives him a vast array of perspectives on relationships, men, and women.
The book itself is quite detailed.
Many critics believe the book operates on many stereotypes which overly-simplifies the topic of relationship, men, and women.
The book depicts men as from Mars (hence, Martians) and women are from Venus (hence, Venusians).
Men (or Martians) are Mr.
Fix-it, and the women (or Venusians) run the Home-Improvement Committee.
According to the book, when men get upset, they go to their personal caves; when women get upset, they go to the well.
The difference is that the cave is where the men sort out their problems and the well is where the women go to get emotionally cleanse.
That is one perspective that the book discusses about men and women.
Just like any book, there are disagreements about its perspectives.
You can use what you need to use.
You can throw away what you do not need to use.
It is a buffet of ideas.
