How to Design Walkways

    • 1). Choose the material that you will use to cover the walkways, whether it be concrete, flagstones, brick pavers, gravel or tiles. You may wish to use different materials for patios or decks that connect to the walkways. The walkway material should match or coordinate with the other materials.

    • 2). Select an edging material for the pathway if necessary. Brick, plastic, wood and metal landscape edging are common choices.

    • 3). Draw a sketch that shows the locations to which the walkways will lead and identifies areas of the yard worthy of attention. This might include play areas, a seating area, a water feature or other landscaping. Labeling each functional area on the sketch will provide you a visual representation of your plan.

    • 4). Place a string along the ground to represent the line of the walkways. Assess how well the proposed walkways flow in the area, ensuring that they don't dissect a main area of the yard. Make any changes to the location of the walkways by moving the string.

    • 5). Install lighting, if needed, to illuminate the walkway during darkness hours.
