When Can Stress Be Good for Us?
Can stress be good? Eustress or good stress is something that we need in life.
We need it when we have a big deadline at our job that we have to meet.
We need it when we are in a bad situation, like, when your a child and you decide to play in a riverbed while it's raining.
Now there is a wall of water coming towards you and you need to get out now (and this wasn't me, I swear).
We need our body to respond to the stress with those fight-or-flight hormones that are so important in situations like those, when it can mean the difference between life and death.
But It isn't just times like those that the feeling of stress can be good.
Think of when you had your first kiss, or when you were waiting in the line to for that huge rollercoaster, or how about when you were getting married.
What do these have to do with stress? Your heart begins beating fast.
Your breathing starts becoming shallow.
This feeling we have in these situations is also related to stress.
But at times like these it is good to feel that way, it's what makes those moments so great.
This stress releases endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.
And what do these do? Endorphins are a natural pain reliever, with a similar effect to morphine.
Endorphins also make you feel excited or happy.
Serotonin helps in relaying messages from one area of your brain to another.
It has an effect on how you feel, appetite, sleep, memory, and learning, among other things.
And dopamine plays a part in you feeling motivated and joy.
Who would want a life without these feelings? I mean I can't imagine my wedding day without me feeling any excitement or nervousness, it just wouldn't be the same.
That would not be too great.
Stress a part of everyone's life, and is only bad when it is chronic or severe.
Like when it stays even after there is no longer any reason to feel stressed.
That is when it can turn into an anxiety disorder.
This is when it's good to learn some tips for managing stress, so that you can turn the bad stress into good stress.
These can include deep breathing, meditation, getting a massage, exercising and a number of other things.
I hope you enjoyed this, I wish you a happy stress day.
