Gifts are some of the reasons we look forward to these holidays.
The joy of getting a thoughtful gift from a dear one is always great.
It can only be equaled by that of seeing your gift was right and gave your beloved ones a reason to be happy.
Striving to ensure you get the right gift is actually a tough process.
It is more so when you shop for your kid's gift.
You want something they'll love.
However, you also want something that will be safe for them to use even in your absence.
There are certain "no-go" areas as far as children's toys are concerned.
There are considerations to make for each age bracket.
For example, Children under 3 years are very likely to put small bits into their mouths.
So if you want to buy them Lego type of toys you must ensure they many times bigger than any baby's mouth can handle.
Because anything that goes into a baby's mouth is likely to be swallowed.
And you don't want emergencies in the future all because you bought your kid some toys.
Another consideration is the design and finish of the toys.
Toys with sharp edges are generally not good for children.
Yes, some may look very attractive but you do know enough to avoid them.
Please, do not buy toys that have labels showing an age that is above your child's.
A lot of folks like taking pride in the fact that their kids are a few years smarter than their ages.
This is not a good occasion to show that pride.
This is especially true if the toy in question has to be plugged into the mains or if they have heating elements.
I personally prefer toys that use batteries and generally avoid toys with heating elements.
Polythene wrappers have been known to suffocate toddlers.
So, please, make sure you throw them far away from their reach.
Take some time out to read the instructions.
Make sure they are approved by the proper government agency.
Those folks know a lot about these things and are charged to make sure companies comply with certain rules.
They often recall some toys based on user's feedback.
Avoid any toy that has been recalled.
Check the toys you've already bought from time to time to ensure they've not been recalled.
If any is recalled, be decisive enough to destroy it even if it is your child's favorite.
There will be pleas and protests but you should know how to explain to your child that you've just discovered it is unsafe for him or her.
Put your foot down.
You know what's at stake here.
And a point to note is that recalls are not only made for products from small unknown companies.
The biggest and the best have had some of their toys recalled.
It's just a matter of folks discovering something unsafe no one thought of previously.
Make sure every toy package is well disposed especially if you have kids in different age brackets.
What may not be a hazard for a 10 year old might be for a 3 year old.
Keep the holidays happy.
Ensure your kids play safely and in safety.
