How to Make a Recyclable Earth Model
- 1). Inflate a large, round balloon, and knot the end.
- 2). Apply masking tape to the balloon in the shape of the continents. This will mark out where the continents will be, and will cause the continents to appear raised.
- 3). Collect old newspapers from the recycling bin, and cut the newspapers with scissors into strips that measure 2 inches wide and 6 inches long.
- 4). Pour 3 cups of water into a saucepan, and add in 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of salt. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until it boils and then reduce the heat to low. Simmer the mixture for 20 minutes, and allow the mixture to cool for 30 more minutes.
- 5). Dip the recycled newspaper strips into the flour mixture, and drape the strips one at a time over the balloon form. Cover the balloon with the layers of coated newspaper strips. Smooth the strips over the balloon. Let the coated balloon dry for six hours.
- 6). Paint the recycled Earth model using tempera paint. Paint the raised landforms brown, green or tan to represent land, and paint the oceans, seas and rivers using blue tempera paint. Allow the paint to dry for one hour before displaying the Earth model.
