How to Install a Sewing Machine in a Cabinet

    • 1). Measure your sewing machine. Most drop-down sewing cabinets, both modern and vintage, can accommodate a machine up to 13 1/8 inches deep, 19 3/4 inches wide and 13 1/8 inches high.

    • 2). Make sure that your sewing machine and your sewing cabinet are a match. Modern sewing cabinets include universal mounts that work for any mechanical sewing machine made to mount in a cabinet. Some machines are portable and cannot be mounted. Vintage cabinets may have been produced for a specific machine but can be adapted with some woodworking skills.

    • 3). Adapt the mount or cabinet to fit your machine. You may need to drill additional holes in the cabinet or mount. The mounting screw holes should line up properly between the sewing machine cabinet or universal mount and your sewing machine. You might also be able to drill directly into your cast metal sewing machine frame to attach mounting hardware. If you are working with a vintage cabinet, see if a modern universal mount will fit your cabinet.

    • 4). Screw mounting hardware into place on your sewing machine. Modern drop-down cabinets should come with the hardware you need for most machines. If you are using a vintage cabinet, consult your sewing machine manufacturer for mounting hardware.

    • 5). Bolt the machine onto the sewing machine cabinet or universal mount. Drop it gently into place, and close your new sewing cabinet.
