    Pine Cone Squirrel

    • Glue a 1- to 1 1/2-inch wide brown or tan craft pompom, the squirrel's head, to the pointed end of a pine cone that is between 3 and 4 inches tall. Twist three brown or tab pine cleaners together and curve it upward into a big question mark, the way a squirrel tail curves. Glue the end of the twisted pine cleaners to the side of the wider end of the pine cone. Measure and cut two 1/2-inch long ovals out of brown felt and glue them to either side of the pompom for ears. Attach two plastic craft wiggly eyes to the head and an acorn to the front of the pine cone.

    Squirrel Mask

    • Paint a paper plate with light brown acrylic paint and draw a face in the middle with a black nose, big, dark eyes and whiskers with a black marker. Study a picture of a squirrel, taking note of proportions and distances between features, to get the right look for the squirrel's face. Cut two ovals out of brown construction paper and glue them to the sides of the top edge of the mask for ears. Glue a plastic sandwich bag to either side of the face and paint the fronts of the bags with light brown acrylic paint. Have the child gather nuts and store them in his "cheek pouches" just like a squirrel would.

    Squirrel Feeder

    • Cut a 3-inch-wide by 4-inch-high opening out of the side of a gallon or larger plastic jug, or a 2-liter soda bottle with a sharp utility knife. Tie a string around the top of the bottle or jug below the rim of the lid and reinforce it with a line of epoxy adhesive around the rope where it touches the jug. Wait 24 hours for the glue to harden. Fill the inside of the jug with large seeds, any type of nut and fruits such as apples, oranges and apricots.

    Squirrel Long Jump

    • Gray squirrels can grow up to 2 feet in length and can jump up to three or four times this length, which helps when they are traveling from tree to tree. Measure how tall you are with a tape measure, multiply this measurement by four and mark this measurement on the ground with chalk or a line of pebbles. For example, if you are 4 feet tall, you would be able to jump 12 to 16 feet if you were a squirrel. Get a running start and see how far you really get.
