In times of hardship and recession many women can put their beauty routine on the back-burner as they feel there are more important things to spend money on.
However, a quick look in the fridge or around the kitchen can conjure up a whole load of natural items which can help every woman look and feel beautiful for mere pennies, without the expense of lotions and potions.
Here are a few of my favourite tips you may find useful: To add sheen and shine to hair add a few drops of lemon juice if you are blonde, or a few drops of vinegar for brunettes to the last rinse when washing your hair.
A quick home-made mask for dry skin can be made by mixing a simple egg yolk with a few drops of lemon juice.
Apply to your face, leave for ten minutes and then rinse.
If you have greasy skin then beat one egg white into a peak, as if making a meringue, add a few drops of lemon juice and apply to your face.
Leave for ten minutes and then rinse off and pat skin dry.
If you suffer from chapped hands in the winter then do not use soap which can be drying, when you need to clean them.
Try washing with oatmeal which has softening properties.
Oatmeal can also be added to a muslin cloth and tied and then left to hang under a running tap when having a bath.
This helps to soften dry skin and can aid those with irritating skin conditions.
If you are suffering from swollen eyelids, you can try cutting a raw potato into rounds and applying to your eyes for five to ten minutes every morning and evening.
You can also try cucumber slices or used camomile teabags, which also have the same effect and can cool the area.
If you want to help strengthen your nails but do not have the money for expensive treatments, try rubbing your nails with a piece of lemon when you have washed your hands.
This simple idea also helps to remove dead cuticles.
If you suffer from painful sunburn and do not have any after sun to hand, try grating a raw potato.
When spread between two layers of gauze and applied to the skin this can offer cooling relief.
If you have discoloured hands from gardening or another diy task, and you are a coffee drinker, try rubbing your hands with the used coffee grounds from your cafetiere or filter pot and then rinsing.
The grounds act like an exfoliator.
Being beautiful does not have to cost the earth.
With a few simple household items which are in your fridge or cupboard you can look and feel great whatever your budget.
