Market Your Freelance Writing - Review of Bram"s Ebook
About.com Rating
When Thursday Bram, an established freelance writer and blogger, offered her ebook, "Market Your Freelance Writing in 31 Days" for review, I expected to get, well, a marketing book- right? How to network, what kinds of brochures to get, and etc. But what Bram has done for fellow freelancers is truly so much more.
Specs
This ebook is based on a 31- day blog series, but has been significantly expanded to 65 pages.
It retails for $13 at Bram's website ThursdayBram.com.
The organization of the information is a key feature. It is a day-by-day guide for the freelancer in need of expanding business and clientele, and covers one topic per day for 31 days. This set up helps alleviate some of the feeling of being overwhelmed by the information and the resulting to-do list.
Thumbs Up
Bram starts off with an instant hook, and doesn't let up. Her advice is obviously based on in-the-trenches work from which new writers will obviously benefit, but her added twists and some novel ideas make this ebook helpful to veterans, too. For example, as opposed to the general practice of tracking income by hours worked, Bram shows writers how to gauge their per-word earnings, setting them up for easy and accurate price quotes later.
But wait! What's that have to do with marketing? That's just it. Even though marketing is the base of the book, Bram has managed to work in a great amount of information, resources and suggestions on all aspects of freelance writing.
Not only that, but she does it with an expert tone that is interesting, clear and readable.
Extras!
"Market Your Freelance Writing in 31 Days" comes with a smattering of extras that make it worth the read.
- List of typical charges per hour and per word.
- Direction and discussion on setting rates.
- Directory of other freelance writers' websites.
- Valuable checklists.
- Specific recommendations of vendors.
- Huge list of niche-based social networks.
Positives and Drawbacks
POSITIVES: Bram differentiates between different outlets and genres of freelance writing as appropriate, presents clear examples and simple graphics, and produces actionable steps that freelancers can follow immediately.
DRAWBACKS: The sheer amount of information was a little overwhelming by Day 26. Writers will need to choose the best strategies for them, and ignore others for now, or risk "to-do inertia"!
