    • 1). Check online for fabric stores that will send you free samples. Two examples are in the Resources section. Select the fabric samples you want the company to send to you, and enter your mailing address. Also check the websites of fabric chain stores, such as Joann Crafts.

    • 2). Call craft stores in your area and ask for a free sample. They will often give you swatches of fabrics if you are specific in what you're looking for. For example, tell the stores you want a sample of red cotton or gray jersey. Ask them to mail it to you, or offer to pick it up in person.

    • 3). Call fabric stores in your area and ask for their fabric scraps, if they won't give you a sample outright. Fabric scraps are loose pieces from the cutting table that the customer isn't buying or that the employee overcut. The stores usually throw these scraps away, so there should be no issue with you asking if you can use the scraps for samples until you decide what fabric you want to purchase.
